ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Jason Vargas kept throwing strikes and catcher Chris Iannetta kept taking his walks - a winning formula for the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.

Vargas scattered four hits through seven scoreless innings, Erick Aybar and Howie Kendrick each hit two-run doubles, and the Los Angeles Angels coaxed a pair of bases-loaded walks out of Jake Peavy in the fourth inning of a 6-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Vargas (3-3) struck out six and walked three while helping the Angels gain a split of the four-game series. The middle of the Chicago lineup - Alex Rios, Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko - were a combined 0 for 8 with a walk against the left-hander, who posted his first victory in six career starts against the White Sox.

"When you've got three guys like that in a lineup, the biggest key is just to try and keep guys off base when they come up to the plate because it limits the damage that they're able to do," Vargas said. "When you can do that, you have more confidence in what you can go about doing with them, and there's more room for error."

Peavy (5-2) gave up four runs, four hits and five walks over six innings after going 4-0 with a 2.10 ERA in his previous five starts. The 2007 NL Cy Young winner is 0-4 with a 6.06 ERA in six career starts against the Angels.

"I felt really good today, and that's the most frustrating part for me," Peavy said. "I went out there with a good game plan and felt like we could execute, but I just didn't quite execute well enough. My slider was the best it's been all year, so I've got some positives to take out of it. It's just hard to be positive right now."

Los Angeles opened the scoring in the third when Iannetta drew a leadoff walk, J.B. Shuck followed with a single and Aybar drove both of them in with his double to right before he was erased in a rundown.

"Obviously the walks are going to kill you, especially leading off an inning. There's no excuse for that," Peavy said. "I have all the respect in the world for Chris Iannetta. He's got a great eye, there's no doubt about it. But good eye or nothing, I've got to throw the ball where he has to swing the bat."

Peavy, who threw 83 of his 117 pitches in the first four innings, walked four more batters in the fourth - including Iannetta and Aybar with the bases loaded - and the Angels increased the margin to 4-0. Two innings later, Peavy struck out the side on 18 pitches.

Iannetta's second walk was his 14th in a span of 33 plate appearances, including four on Saturday. He has 27 overall, just two fewer than he had last season in 221 plate appearances. His career high is 70, with Colorado in 2011.

"He's walking a lot," manager Mike Scioscia said. "I mean, if you look at Chris' history, there's no doubt the walk is in his game. Even when he was going through that little rough spot earlier in the season, he still drew some walks. I think it's great plate discipline, especially when you're not swinging the bat that well."

Rios drove in Chicago's first run with an eighth-inning double against Dane De La Rosa. It extended his hitting streak to 14 games, eclipsing his previous best in 2006 with Toronto.

Ernesto Frieri was called in to protect a 4-1 lead, trying to get his second four-out save in two days after giving up a three-run homer in the eighth against Hector Gimenez on Saturday before closing that one out.

The right-hander walked three batters in the ninth this time before notching his ninth save in 10 attempts overall. Frieri gave up a sacrifice fly by Alejandro De Aza before retiring Alexei Ramirez on a flyball to end it.

Kendrick gave Frieri a couple of insurance runs in the eighth with his double inside third base against rookie Brian Omogrosso.

NOTES: Peavy had issued eight walks in 45 2-3 innings over his seven previous starts this season. The three-time All-Star, who led the NL in strikeouts in 2005 and 2007 with San Diego, got the 1,800th of his career in the first inning when he caught Mike Trout looking. ... INF Chris Nelson was added to the Angels' 25-man roster, one day after he was claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees. They are the third team he's been with this season, including Colorado. ... The Angels optioned 3B Luis Jimenez to Triple-A Salt Lake, and sent outright RHP Barry Enright to Salt Lake after he cleared waivers. Enright had been designated for assignment on May 16, one day after giving up four runs in two-plus innings against Kansas City in a 9-5 loss. ... Dunn returned to the lineup as the designated hitter, after leaving Saturday's game in the fifth inning because of back spasms. He finished 0 for 3 with three strikeouts and a walk. ... The White Sox return home to start an eight-game homestand on Monday against Boston.

But you might not remember that, because other online video platforms long ago left Yahoo in the proverbial dust. Today, as Yahoo streamed its Flickr product and Tumblr acquisition announcements, we were given a demonstration of why Yahoo has been left in the dust -- and why it's had to turn to acquisitions for help in, well, nearly every department.

Metro-North Railroad officials tour the scene of the train derailment, Saturday, May 18, 2013 in Bridgeport, Conn. Officials described a devastating scene of shattered cars and other damage where two trains packed with rush-hour commuters collided in Connecticut, saying Saturday it's fortunate that no one was killed and that there weren't even more injuries. (AP Photo/The Connecticut Post, Christian Abraham) MANDATORY CREDIT

(AP) ? The commuter train derailment and collision that left dozens injured outside New York City was not the result of foul play, officials said Saturday, but a fractured section of rail is being studied to determine if it is connected to the accident.

National Transportation Safety Board member Earl Weener said Saturday the broken rail is of substantial interest to investigators and a portion of the track will be sent to a lab for analysis.

Weener said it's not clear if the accident caused the fracture or if the rail was broken before the crash. He said he won't speculate on the cause of the derailment and emphasized the investigation was in its early stages.

Seventy-two people were sent to the hospital Friday evening after a Metro-North train heading east from New York City derailed and was hit by a train heading west from New Haven. Most have been discharged.

Officials earlier described devastating damage and said it was fortunate no one was killed.

"All of the injured people described the really harrowing experience of having the train jolt to a stop, the dust, darkness, other kinds of factors that made it particularly frightening," said U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who visited several patients in the hospital.

Blumenthal said a Metro-North conductor helped passengers despite her own injuries.

"Her story is really one of great strength and courage helping other passengers off the train in spite of her own very severe pain," Blumenthal said. "She eventually had to be helped off herself."

The crash damaged the tracks and threatened to snarl travel in the Northeast Corridor. The crash also caused Amtrak to suspend service between New York and Boston.

"The damage is absolutely staggering," Blumenthal said, describing the shattered interior of cars and tons of metal tossed around. "I feel that we are fortunate that even more injuries were not the result of this very tragic and unfortunate accident."

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy said it was "frankly amazing" people weren't killed on scene.

Both said new Metro-North Railroad cars built with higher standards may have saved lives.

Metro-North said train service will remain suspended between South Norwalk and New Haven until further notice. Railroad officials said rebuilding the two tracks and restore train service "will take well into next week."

"We want our customers to know that while you travel on Metro-North, you can remain confident that your safety, and the safety of our employees, is always the first priority in everything we do," said Howard Permut, President of MTA Metro-North Railroad.

NTSB investigators arrived Saturday and are expected to be on site for seven to 10 days. They will look at the brakes and performance of the trains, the condition of the tracks, crew performance and train signal information, among other things.

When the NTSB has concluded the on-site phase of its investigation, Metro-North will begin to remove the damaged rail cars and remaining debris. The process requires specialized, heavy equipment that will be in place by Sunday, officials said. Only after the damaged train cars have been removed can Metro-North begin the work of rebuilding the damaged tracks and overhead wires.

"It is a significant undertaking that could take days to complete," MTA said in a statement.

The NTSB has allowed Metro-North to begin removing some of the track and wire from the scene.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said commuters should make plans for alternative travel through the area and urged them to consult the state Department of Transportation website for information.

Weener said data recorders on board are expected to provide the speed of the trains at the time of the crash and other information.

"Our mission is to understand not just what happened but why it happened and determine ways of preventing it from happening again," Weener said.

About 700 people were on board the Metro-North trains when one heading east from New York City's Grand Central Terminal to New Haven derailed at about 6:10 p.m. just outside Bridgeport, transit and Bridgeport officials said. Passengers described a chaotic, terrifying scene of crunching metal and flying bodies.

A spokeswoman for St. Vincent Medical Center said late Saturday that 46 people from the crash were treated there, with six of them admitted. All were in stable condition, she said.

A Bridgeport Hospital spokesman said 26 people from the crash were treated there, with three of them admitted. One was in critical condition and two were in stable condition, he said. The other 23 were released.

Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch said the disruption caused by the crash could cost the region's economy millions of dollars.

Passenger Frank Bilotti said he was returning from a business trip in Boston on the westbound train when it crashed.

"Everybody was pretty much tossed around," said Bilotti, 53, of Westport, who wasn't injured other than a sore neck.

Firefighters used ladders to help people evacuate after the derailed cars dug into the banks of the tracks, Bilotti said.

"There were people on stretchers," he said. "There were people lying on the ground."

Blumenthal credited first responders, saying their "quick reactions and heroic efforts undoubtedly saved lives."

The MTA operates the Metro-North Railroad, the second-largest commuter railroad in the nation. The Metro-North main lines ? the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven ? run northward from New York City's Grand Central Terminal into suburban New York and Connecticut.

At Grand Central, Frances Liu and her family were trying to get to New Haven, where Liu is graduating from Yale. A train could get them only as far north as Stamford.

"And then we'll rent a car and drive," she said.

Liu's parents had flown in from China for her graduation and were touring the country around her commencement. But the car-rental plan could face a snag ? Liu never got a driver's license, although her parents had their Chinese licenses.

"My mom can drive. So I hope it'll be OK!" Liu said as she rushed off to decide on a train.

The last significant train collision involving Metro-North occurred in 1988 when a train engineer was killed in Mount Vernon, N.Y., when one train empty of passengers rear-ended another, railroad officials said.

Tech, labor brandish dueling studies in U.S. immigration fight

By Caren Bohan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The technology industry and organized labor are locked in a fight that threatens to complicate the U.S. Senate's immigration bill.

At the heart of the debate is whether there is a shortage of Americans with the math and science skills needed for work at technology firms like Facebook Inc, Google Inc and Microsoft Corp.

Labor is brandishing research that says the scarcity of workers is a myth while the tech industry is pointing to other studies that say the shortage is very real and is a threat to U.S. competitiveness.

In behind-the-scenes maneuvering that has created a quandary for Senate supporters of a broad immigration bill, lobbyists say Silicon Valley is pulling out all the stops to fight restrictions on a foreign-worker visa program known as H-1B that is aimed at making sure Americans get the first crack at any job openings.

Talks are expected to be ongoing this weekend to try to resolve the dispute over the high-skilled visa program that has proved to be a stumbling block for the Senate Judiciary Committee, which aims to vote on the immigration legislation by the end of the month.

If a deal can't be reached, it could alienate tech companies that have told lawmakers they might reconsider their support for the bill. It could also cost the vote of a key Republican senator, Orrin Hatch of Utah, who is on the fence about the legislation.

LABOR SAYS PLENTY OF U.S. WORKERS

The immigration bill, President Barack Obama's top domestic legislative priority, would create a path to citizenship for some 11 million undocumented immigrants, step up border enforcement and nearly triple the number of visas for high-skilled foreign workers. The legislation, drafted by a bipartisan group of eight senators, would also create new guest worker programs for low-skilled jobs such as waiters, hotel workers and construction workers.

The AFL-CIO has accused the tech industry, which has put its huge lobbying muscle into the fight, of becoming "greedy." The companies have already had a great deal of influence on the legislation and are now "trying to get more and more and more," said Andrea Zuniga DiBitetto, legislative representative with the AFL-CIO.

A study that labor and its allies have been touting has become a flashpoint for its dispute with Silicon Valley. The report from the liberal Economic Policy Institute (EPI) think tank, says the United States has "more than a sufficient supply" of workers with education in science, technology, engineering and math, known as STEM. It says that for every two students graduating from U.S. colleges with such degrees, only one has been getting hired in science or technology fields. (EPI study: http://r.reuters.com/myv28t)

The EPI study also says there has been wage stagnation in these fields for years, which it says means workers lack the power to bid up salaries because there aren't enough job openings.

"If there's a shortage, why don't you increase wages?" said Hal Salzman, one of the authors of the EPI study.

In a scathing criticism of the EPI study, Robert Hoffman of the Information Technology Industry Council (ITIC) - which represents companies such as Apple Inc, Microsoft and Google - pointed to 83,000 job openings that were listed on Dice.com, which posts tech job listings. He also cited data at the government's Bureau of Labor Statistics that he said shows a huge demand for computer science majors that is not met by the number of people graduating in the field.

"This would suggest, for EPI at least, that U.S. employers are engaged in a massive conspiracy to advertise for U.S. STEM jobs that do not exist," Hoffman wrote in a blog post last month on the ITIC web site. "That's quite a conspiracy. I wonder if EPI thinks we faked the moon landing."

TECH FIRMS SAYS SHORTAGE OF WORKERS

Hoffman pointed to a separate study put out this month by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation that accused EPI of "cherry-picking" poorly performing tech-related fields to include in its study and of "misreading" labor market signals. (ITIF study: http://r.reuters.com/nyv28t)

Hatch is championing the cause of the tech industry, which wants changes in a provision requiring that companies advertise jobs on a government-run website and offer them first to qualified Americans. Tech companies want most firms to only be required to make "good faith" efforts to hire Americans.

The AFL-CIO's most powerful ally in the fight over skilled-worker visas is Senator Richard Durbin, an Illinois Democrat who sits on both the Judiciary Committee and is one of the eight senators who wrote the immigration bill.

In a sign that he is at least open to talking about a way to satisfy the tech industry, Durbin, when asked if there was a deal yet on the dispute, said on Thursday morning, "We're working on it."

Suspected US drone in Yemen kills 4 militants

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Yemeni security officials say a suspected US drone strike killed four al-Qaida militants in the country's south.

The officials say the attack took place around dawn Saturday in an area called Deyfa in Abyan province. Officials spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Yemeni forces battled al-Qaida in Abyan province last year, routing out militants from major cities that al-Qaida had overrun during the country's 2011 political turmoil. The militants fled to surrounding mountainous areas.

According to several research groups and The Associated Press's own reporting, there has been a dramatic rise in such drone strikes in Yemen since the country's new U.S.-backed president assumed power early last year.

Washington says al-Qaida in Yemen is among the group's most dangerous and active branches worldwide.

World Nomads Tunisia: FIAF's Biennial Celebration Highlights The Country's Changing Art Landscape (PHOTOS)

The Arab Spring countries of North Africa and the Middle East are ushering in a new generation of contemporary artists, eager to express their social and political perspectives in an era of post-revolutionary change. Journalists have taken notice, shining a light on the region and its potential for explosive creativity by reporting on individuals and communities in Egypt, Libya, and Yemen who are leading the way for a renewed artistic culture in their respective locations.

The World Nomads festival is echoing this sentiment by choosing Tunisia as their country of focus for the 2013 biennial celebration. For the fifth edition of the festival, the French Institute Alliance Fran?aise (FIAF) is hosting a month-long bevy of multi-media events in New York dedicated to the art, music, dance and theater of the North African state. From the street art of eL Seed to the musical compositions of Emel Mathlouthi, the series of exhibits, lectures and performances seeks to showcase the innovation and experimentation brewing all across Tunisia.

We chatted with Marie-Monique Steckel, President of FIAF, via email, who explained the festival's interest in Tunisia and the burgeoning contemporary art scene she's witnessed there.

world nomads tunisia
By Tunisian artist eL Seed, who presented during "The After Revolution" event at IDEAS CITY Festival.

What attracted you to the art world of Tunisia?

The timing of World Nomads Tunisia was particularly great. The explosion of young talent in Tunisia after the revolution made me consider Tunisia with renewed enthusiasm for the return of our biennial World Nomads festival, after focusing on the art and culture of Morocco in 2011. Indeed, when I had the chance to go [to Tunisia] six months ago with Elizabeth Krief Manardo, our Tunisian-born Visual Arts Advisor, we saw a real thriving scene with young talent, particularly the involvement of women in the arts scene, which we wanted to showcase in NY.

What types of art-making dominate the creative scenes in the country?

As you know, Street Art was illegal under the pre-revolutionary government, and is therefore a newly expanding medium for expression. Truly though, what dominates the new creative scene is music, songs, and photography. Our festival reflects this with three wonderful singers, notably Emel Mathlouthi, the voice of the revolution, who will perform songs banned in Tunisia at her concert at FIAF on May 22. The photography exhibition at White Box is also particularly powerful, with great pictures of street demonstrations and photos of women that capture the new creative scene in the country.

world nomads tunisia
Emel Mathlouthi (Listen to her music here), who will be performing in New York on May 22, 2013.

How important do you think the artist's role is in this period of identity building post-revolution?

I feel the artist?s role is extremely important and felt by a lot of Tunisian young women and men. The revolution was an opening for creative talent to flourish and an invitation for people to express themselves. I believe they have an important role in the shaping and sharing of a sense of freedom that is experienced by the entire country.

Is a lot of the art you see in Tunisia politically oriented? What types of social or political issues are addressed by artists?

A lot of the art that we see deals with the role and status of women, and the strong desire not to return to a time of oppression and restrictive rules for women, who had made great strides for increased rights since 1956. Whether it is photography, painting or sculpture, many works are influenced by this tension, keenly felt by many artists. A key example is work by Mohamed Ben Slama, whose strong, evocative paintings of women were the subject of controversy. In June 2012, a painting of his featuring a nude woman surrounded by hovering, bearded men was lacerated and burned by the Salafists at the La Marsa art fair. He even received death threats and had to flee Tunisia, and is now in political exile.

If you could choose a few emerging Tunisian artists we should know about, who would they be?

It is so difficult to choose with so many great artists represented in this festival, and so many more we did not get a chance to showcase. I would say Mohamed Ben Slama for his courage in the face of the political situation, but all of the artists presented in our gallery exhibits have struggled. For graffiti artists, Jaye and eL Seed have done amazing work with our festival in NY, and I am excited to continue to watch their careers.

World Nomads Tunisia is hosting events throughout the month of May. Check out the calendar here. Scroll through the slideshow below for a look at the work of Tunisian visual artists and festival participants eL Seed and Mohamed Ben Slama.

Angelina Jolie has double mastectomy to elude breast cancer

By Paul Casciato

LONDON (Reuters) - Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has had a double mastectomy to reduce her chances of getting breast cancer and says she hopes her story will inspire other women fighting the life-threatening disease.

Jolie wrote in the New York Times on Tuesday the operation has made it easier for her to reassure her six children that she would not die young from cancer, like her own mother did at 56.

"We often speak of 'Mommy's mommy', and I find myself trying to explain the illness that took her away from us. They have asked if the same could happen to me," wrote Jolie, 37.

"I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is I carry a 'faulty' gene."

The Oscar-winning actress said her doctors had estimated she had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer.

"Once I knew this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much as I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy," she said.

Partner and fellow Hollywood star Brad Pitt was by Jolie's side through three months of treatment that ended late in April, she said. The two got engaged last year.

Jolie said that even though she had kept silent about her treatment while it was going on, she hoped her story would now help other women.

"I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer. It is my hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested."

Breast cancer alone kills some 458,000 people each year, according to the World Health Organization. It is estimated that one in 300 to one in 500 women carry a BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 gene mutation, as Jolie does.

Her decision was hailed by breast cancer patients and charities.

Richard Francis, Head of Research at the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity in Britain, said it demonstrated the importance of educating women with the gene fault.

"For women like Angelina it's important that they are made fully aware of all the options that are available, including risk-reducing surgery and extra breast screening," Francis told Reuters.

Breast Cancer Campaign Chief Executive Baroness Delyth Morgan said Jolie's openness in talking about her experience and her decision to have surgery would raise awareness of the disease and its risk.

Jolie won a 1999 best supporting actress Oscar for "Girl, Interrupted".

She lends her star power to a range of humanitarian campaigns, including serving more than 10 years as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

In April, she urged governments to step up efforts to bring wartime sex offenders to justice.

2 new viruses could both spark global outbreaks

LONDON (AP) ? Two respiratory viruses in different parts of the world have captured the attention of global health officials ? a novel coronavirus in the Middle East and a new bird flu spreading in China.

Last week, the coronavirus related to SARS spread to France, where one patient who probably caught the disease in Dubai infected his hospital roommate. Officials are now trying to track down everyone who went on a tour group holiday to Dubai with the first patient as well as all contacts of the second patient. Since it was first spotted last year, the new coronavirus has infected 34 people, killing 18 of them. Nearly all had some connection to the Middle East.

The World Health Organization, however, says there is no reason to think the virus is restricted to the Middle East and has advised health officials worldwide to closely monitor any unusual respiratory cases.

At the same time, a new bird flu strain, H7N9, has been infecting people in China since at least March, causing 32 deaths out of 131 known cases.

WHO, which is closely monitoring the viruses, says both have the potential to cause a pandemic ? a global epidemic ? if they evolve into a form easily spread between people. Here's a crash course in what we know so far about them:

Q: How are humans getting infected by the new coronavirus?

A: Scientists don't exactly know. There is some suggestion the disease is jumping directly from animals like camels or goats to humans, but officials are also considering other sources, like a common environmental exposure. The new coronavirus is most closely related to a bat virus, but it's possible that bats are transmitting the disease via another source before humans catch it.

Q: Can the new coronavirus be spread from human to human?

A: In some circumstances, yes. There have been clusters of the disease in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Britain and now France, where the virus has spread from person-to-person. Most of those infected were in very close contact, such as people taking care of a sick family member or health workers treating patients. There is no evidence the virus is spreading easily between people and all cases of human-to-human transmission have been limited so far.

Q: How are people catching the bird flu H7N9?

A: Some studies suggest the new bird flu is jumping directly to people from poultry at live bird markets. Cases have slowed down since Chinese authorities began shutting down such markets. But it's unclear exactly what kind of exposure is needed for humans to catch the virus and very few animals have tested positive for it. Unlike the last bird flu strain to cause global concern, H5N1, the new strain doesn't appear to make birds sick and may be spreading silently in poultry populations.

Q: What precautions can people take against these new viruses?

A: WHO is not advising people to avoid traveling to the Middle East or China but is urging people to practice good personal hygiene like regular hand-washing. "Until we know how and where humans are contracting these two diseases, we cannot control them," said Gregory Hartl, WHO spokesman.

Q: Which virus should we be more worried about?

A: It's impossible to know. "We really don't want to play the game of predicting which virus will be more deadly than the other," Hartl said. At the moment, both are worrisome since so little is known about how they are infecting humans and both appear to cause severe disease. "Any virus that has the ability to develop the capacity to spread from human to human is of great concern to WHO," he said.

    Arianna Huffington: Sunday Roundup

This week showed how celebration can often go hand-in-hand with desolation. In Bangladesh, a woman was rescued from the rubble of the collapsed garment factory, having been buried alive for 17 days -- even as the death toll passed 1,000. In Cleveland, Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were freed after years in captivity, touching off celebrations that were tempered by revelations of the horror of their prolonged abuse. With the raising of its spire, 1 World Trade Center became the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, nearly a dozen years after the devastating losses of 9/11. And though a lowered deficit is good news, any celebration should be tempered by the fact that fiscal belt-tightening has come with a high price: disastrous unemployment rates. As the New York Times put it: "Consensus about the result is clear: Immediate deficit reduction is a drag on full economic recovery." Consensus, that is, everywhere but in Washington.

Contemporary jazz: The perfect music for wedding and funeral - Artipot

Any true music lover would appreciate good jazz music. It is the kind of music which can make even a grumpy person shake his legs or even a reticent dancer tap his feet. It has come a long way and has also influenced piano over the years. A special talent is required to incorporate jazz with piano. But the contemporary jazz has certainly gone through a sea change and has developed over the century.

Many of the famous pianists of the 20th century have dabbled in jazz and have made great memorable music with it. It has a quaint quality about it and triggers a lot of nostalgia even during the 21st century when frivolous cacophony has taken over in many music forms. This genre of music has influenced both the music maker and the listener. In this context, one must also throw light on the great work done by pianists of African-American origin. Many of them pioneered the trend in the early part of the 20th century. Their legacy has been carried forward in today's times by the contemporary musicians. In an era when many songs are pretty bland and banal, jazz has a powerful quality to it. It has survived the test of the time and is still considered one of the best genres of music.

Contemporary jazz has cut across all ages and generations to have an impact on people of all types. Regardless of the culture of the people, they have all appreciated this music and have savored its delights for years. Today, most of the night clubs all over the world have compulsorily included this music form as a part of their program. Professional jazz players can be hired for a reasonable fee even by people who like to throw private parties.

Jazz has broken many racial and geographical barriers as well. At a time when many countries were plagued with the evils of racism, it is one thing which connected people and kept them together. Its serene and soothing tune has that feel of harmony which can bind people together. Even the modern people understand this and none can deny its mellifluous melodies which always win the heart.

Contemporary jazz of the 21st century has brought forward the original charm. The current music albums of many artists incorporate this genre since it has a special charm to it. It has also had an influence in folk music. One can even say that it has had a role in formal music as well. The instrument which has been most deeply associated with jazz is a piano. However, the role of trumpet and saxophone should also be highlighted since they have always found their presence felt wherever jazz has been belted out.

The contemporary form of jazz has undergone innovation and musicians of today have improvised over it to fuse vintage with current tastes. Such an endeavor ensures that even lovers of modern music find it irresistible. Be it in a wedding or a funeral, jazz has and will always rule the roost.

Tricks To Help You With Home Decoration

TIP! An excellent tip for interior design is purchasing some excellent art. You may not think so, but one good piece of artwork can take a room to an entirely new level.

A lot of people love making changes to their house all the time. Unfortunately, they are not that good when it comes to interior decorating. Interior designing is something that novices can do easily, so you should never fear that it?s something you can?t handle yourself! Read on and learn some great interior planning tips.

TIP! Before beginning your project, calculate your available finances and how much you can allot to completing it. Nothing is worse than starting a project when you cannot afford it.

One thing that you must remember when designing a room is to make or create a mood. Because of this, you need to think about a mood you want to convey when selecting the items that are going to be in your rooms. If you want a peaceful, serene mood for the room, go for soft, warm colors.

TIP! If you want to do an easy redecorating task, de-clutter your home. Pretty much any home will benefit from a nice de-cluttering.

Whenever you are redesigning a room in your home it is extremely important that you choose the right color scheme. You can find advice on what colors you should never combine online and in decorating magazines if you are not sure. Avoid incorporating many bold colors, which can ruin the flow of a room.

TIP! Whenever installing wall art, make sure it is being hung at eye level. If you hang art too high, you run the risk of throwing the whole room off balance, and making it appear small.

A good thing to remember with interior decorating is to put in unique colors and patterns. These patterns can help to enliven the look and detail of your living space. Contrasting patterns or textures lend a modern, contemporary look to a home.

TIP! A kitchen redesign can be as easy as replacing some cabinet doors. Consider using glass doors rather than the traditional wood doors so that your kitchen can open up and appear brighter.

The best thing you can do to prep for a redecoration project to to remove clutter. Nearly ever home could benefit from having a good clean-up. Try to get rid of things that you do not use anymore. Donate your extra stuff to a thrift shop, recycle it, or make some money with a yard sale.

TIP! Paint is a good investment, but only high quality paint. Investing in the wrong quality paint can cause you to tap into your budget in the future.

Do not overlook small details. By selecting a few small features of a room to change, you can make a big design statement. For example, new cabinet knobs or window dressing may be just as effective at transforming the look of a room as purchasing big-ticket furniture.

TIP! Try to avoid outrageous wall colors and wallpaper that may be a detriment when you sell your home. Adding your own personality is good, but don?t add anything permanent that is too unusual.

Whenever attempting a home renovation project, try to prevent cluttering up your rooms. Too much furniture or accessories can make your room look cramped and smaller than it really is. Rather, just choose a few important pieces of furniture so as to create a lot of open space.

TIP! Adequate lighting is of the utmost importance for any interior design project. A variety of options exist that can allow you to bring more light to a room.

Before decorating, formulate an action plan. You should find how many family members will be frequently in the room you are decorating. Consider your visitors and family when you are doing redecorating, you should also make them happy.

TIP! Extra care should be taken when designing a room containing a fireplace. Everything on the mantle should be balanced.

It?s fun to add modern, on-trend items to your interior planning project. They make a room feel stylish and modern. Remember though, pieces that are on trend should be used sparingly. If the zebra print pillows you use are out of style, swap them for something else. It?s harder to replace an animal print sofa.

TIP! Bathrooms can take on a whole new feel when you incorporate a pedestal tub. These tubs are gorgeous and classic, and are more popular than ever.

A good interior design project always revolves around excellent lighting. There are a multitude of ways to bring light into a space, including large windows, mirrors and lighting fixtures. Making sure that all lights work well together can really improve the look of any room.

TIP! If you have art that you want to display correctly on the walls, try to avoid having it hang too high or low. Try placing it around 8-10 inches from the back of your couch.

When you are placing furniture in your living room, keep the traffic in mind. There should be enough room at all times for people to sit and stand around. You want to avoid traffic jams when you want to enjoy your hard work!

TIP! Use a ceiling paint that is two shades brighter when compared to the room walls. If you do not do this, your room will closed-in and seem small.

If you have a lot of possessions, do not overdecorate your walls. There are people who become attached to things more than others. If your tables are full of small mementos that you love to have near at hand, undecorated walls are best. Otherwise, your home will look cluttered and unkept. So, keep your possessions stored out of sight or selectively displayed for a clean look.

Consider the amount of natural light a room gets before paining it. If you think about what time it is you will know what walls are getting what sun!

TIP! Tile and hardwood flooring that reflect light, can subtly enhance the natural lighting of the room. Hardwood and white tile are just two options for reflective floors that you can use.

Now that you?ve read the information above, you now have great knowledge on what you need to know when dealing with interior decorating. It will be easy to set your own home apart from the rest now that you are aware of these new techniques. When you utilize these helpful tips, you will finally be able to create the home of your dreams.

For Cleveland women, ordeal of recovery begins now

Year after year, the clock ticked by and the calendar marched forward, carrying the three women further from the real world and pulling them deeper into an isolated nightmare.

Now, for the women freed from captivity inside a Cleveland house, the ordeal is not over. Next comes recovery ? from sexual abuse and their sudden, jarring reentry into a world much different from the one they were snatched from a decade ago.

Therapists say that with extensive treatment and support, healing is likely for the women, who were 14, 16 and 21 when they were abducted. But it is often a long and difficult process.

"It's sort of like coming out of a coma," says Dr. Barbara Greenberg, a psychologist who specializes in treating abused teenagers. "It's a very isolating and bewildering experience."

In the world the women left behind, a gallon of gas cost about $1.80. Barack Obama was a state senator. Phones were barely taking pictures. Things did not "go viral." There was no YouTube, no Facebook, no iPhone.

Emerging into the future is difficult enough. The two younger Cleveland women are doing it without the benefit of crucial formative years.

"By taking away their adolescence, they weren't able to develop emotional and psychological and social skills," says Duane Bowers, who counsels traumatized families through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

"They're 10 years behind in these skills. Those need to be caught up before they can work on reintegrating into society," he says.

That society can be terrifying. As freed captive Georgina DeJesus arrived home from the hospital, watched by a media horde, she hid herself beneath a hooded sweatshirt. The freed Amanda Berry slipped into her home without being seen.

"They weren't hiding from the press, from the cameras," Bowers says. "They were hiding from the freedom, from the expansiveness."

In the house owned by Ariel Castro, who is charged with kidnapping and raping the women, claustrophobic control ruled. Police say Castro kept them chained in a basement and locked in upstairs rooms, that he fathered a child with one of them, and that he starved and beat his captives into multiple miscarriages.

In all those years, they only set foot outside of the house twice ? and then only as far as the garage.

"Something as simple as walking into a Target is going to be a major problem for them," Bowers says.

Jessica Donohue-Dioh, who works with survivors of human trafficking as a social work instructor at Xavier University in Cincinnati, says the freedom to make decisions can be one of the hardest parts of recovery.

"'How should I respond? What do they really want from me?'" Donohue-Dioh says, describing a typical reaction. "They may feel they may not have a choice in giving the right answer."

That has been a challenge for Jaycee Dugard, who is now an advocate for trauma victims after surviving 18 years in captivity ? "learning how to speak up, how to say what I want instead of finding out what everybody else wants," Dugard told ABC News.

Like Berry, Dugard was impregnated by her captor and is now raising the two children. She still feels anger about her ordeal.

"But then on the other hand, I have two beautiful daughters that I can never be sorry about," Dugard says.

Another step toward normalcy for the three women will be accepting something that seems obvious to the rest of the world: They have no reason to feel guilty.

"First of all, I'd make sure these young women know that nothing that happened to them is their fault," Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped at age 14 and held in sexual captivity for nine months, told People magazine.

Donohue-Dioh says that even for people victimized by monstrous criminals, guilt is a common reaction. The Cleveland women told police they were snatched after accepting rides from Castro.

"They need to recognize that what happened as a result of that choice is not the rightful or due punishment. That's really difficult sometimes," Donohue-Dioh says.

Family support will be crucial, the therapists say. But what does family mean when one member has spent a decade trapped with strangers?

"The family has to be ready to include a stranger into its sphere," Bowers says. "Because if they try to reintegrate the 14-year-old girl who went missing, that's not going to work. That 14-year-old girl doesn't exist anymore. They have to accept this stranger as someone they don't know."

Natascha Kampusch, who was kidnapped in Austria at age 10 and spent eight years in captivity, has said that her 2006 reunion with her family was both euphoric and awkward.

"I had lived for too long in a nightmare, the psychological prison was still there and stood between me and my family," Kampusch wrote in "3096 Days," her account of the ordeal.

Kampusch, now 25, said in a German television interview that she was struggling to form normal relationships, partly because many people seem to shy away from her.

"What a lot of these people say is, what's more important than what happened is how people react," says Greenberg, the psychologist.

The world has reacted to the Cleveland women with an outpouring of sympathy and support. This reaction will live on, amplified by the technologies that rose while the women were locked away.

Yet these women are more than the sum of their Wikipedia pages. Dugard, Smart and other survivors often speak of not being defined by their tragedies ? another challenge for the Cleveland survivors.

"A classmate will hear their name, or a co-worker, and will put them in this box: This is who you are and what happened to you," Donohue-Dioh says. "Our job as society is to move beyond what they are and what they've experienced."

"This isn't who they are," Dugard told People. "It is only what happened to them."

Still, for the three Cleveland women, their journey forward will always include that horrifying lost decade.

"We can't escape our past," Donohue-Dioh says, "so how are we able to manage how much it influences our present and our future?"

Born of fire and greatness, the cosmos was created with an infinite number of chances of anything and anyone. The days of the universe crawled to now, with gods and devils reigning above and bellow. But the time of mortals has come, with infinite choice.
